Welcome!

Hello to my fellow entrepreneurs, mamas, birth nerds, and anyone who, like myself, has an interest in maternal health!

First, I want to be completely transparent: life is busy, and sometimes creativity (and ambitions) stall. While I plan to post regular content, consistency can be one of my weaknesses.

Secondly, I am extremely excited to use this space to share my birth story and those of others who are willing and wanting to share, along with favorite recipes and educational tidbits surrounding pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Sooo, WELCOME!

This is Doula Mae Birth Services, founded by me, Samantha, in 2016. I became a doula in my mid-20s, well before having children — I navigated on-call life while discovering myself, my husband, and most recently, navigating motherhood.

When I first became a doula, I wanted to educate families so they could leave the hospital feeling prepared for parenthood. This passion soon morphed into a desire to inform families of ALL their choices regarding pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I feel that too often birth is viewed as a negative, scary occurrence, but it doesn’t have to be that way. It CAN and SHOULD be a positive, joyous healthy life event instead of a medical condition to be fixed.*

*I say this with the full knowledge that not every pregnancy is healthy or low risk, and some scenarios require medical intervention; however, a pregnancy should begin as healthy or low risk and should only become unhealthy or high risk if or when it changes.

Now eight years in I’ve stopped counting how many births I’ve attended, however, I know it to be over 150 and that I’ve supported countless more through other avenues such as childbirth education, placenta encapsulation, and lactation. In those years I’ve found more of myself and what my ideals are around birth, especially in the last year as I navigated my pregnancy and birth.

Over the years I’ve enjoyed learning all I could about birth yet in recent years I’ve found more clarity and focus on where my passion is strongest.

To me pregnancy is mind-blowingly cool, birth is inspirational, and postpartum brings a level of gratitude I never really understood until now.

My passion has always been strongest regarding topics related to birth, particularly in providing birth education to help families become more confident in the choices they have and the decisions they make.

Finally, after experiencing pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, I’m excited to bring a new perspective to my business. I hope to instill confidence, wonder, and empowerment in the women I support and their families. There is so much that is unknown, but with even basic knowledge, I believe the ideas surrounding maternal health can shift and be viewed in a more positive light.

I’m a woman who

prefers being barefoot, watching the sunset and the moonrise, and forever a homebirth-loving mama who is determined to grow a backyard wildflower meadow and vegetable garden while happily failing and learning in the kitchen with my family!

Next up…

it’s birth story time!! The main reason I began this blog was to provide a platform to share stories and next week it’s going to begin with mine!🤰
